Rota Razvedki vs German Pioniers


Every year, the day after Christmas, Luke and I always play a game of Flames of War. We leave the setup entirely up to the dice. We decided on Late War, and flipped a coin between Western front and Eastern front. We got Eastern Front. I then randomly set up the board using the modified V2 terrain rules from the FoW website. The mission we rolled up was Pincer.

    Luke's Pionierkompanie: Luke spreads the Pioneers across the front. Stug Gs in ambush.

    TURN 1

    Before Infiltration.

    The Emchas infiltrate.

    Luke doesn't roll a 6, so I still have the first turn!

    Everything drives forward!

    Rota on the right.

    Luke springs his ambush!

    One dead, 1 bailed emcha.

    TURN 1 SUMMARY
    Steven's Rota Razvedki: Everything drives forward! .50 cals blazing.

    Luke's Pionierkompanie: Stugs ambush at long range, knocking out one Sherman before stormtroopering back down the hill.


    TURN 2

    Top of 2.

    The right Rota continue their advance. The central Rota dismiss some troops to clear the wire.

    The Shermans move up, peppering the pioneers with .50 cal shots. The Stugs move up the hill and bail another tank.

    TURN 2 SUMMARY
    Steven's Rota Razvedki: Aside from some maneuvering, and preparing to clear the wire, shooting is ineffective.

    Luke's Pionierkompanie: Luke hunkers down waiting for reserves. The StuGs knock on one Emcha, but fail to destroy it. They then fail to shoot and scoot!

    TURN 3

    Top of 3.

    The right hand Rota surge forward, with a flame thrower knocking out 3 teams in the church.

    The ensuing assault clears the defenders out.

    Luke's air support comes in at long last! Effective AA fire knocks it down to 1 plane (Curse you flying tank!!)

    Brummbars arrive from reserve.

    The planes tear apart 2 M4A1s and knock out 1 team.

    After MGs tear them apart, the Brummbars assault!

    The Brummbars single handedly stop any progress on the right flank.

    TURN 3 SUMMARY
    Steven's Rota Razvedki: The right hand Rotas launch a successful assault. The soldiers on the left flounder on the wire. The Emchas again blaze away to no avail. Decoy Stugs continue forward, whistling innocently. 2 StuGs are knocked out after failing to shoot and scoot last turn.


    Luke's Pionierkompanie: Brummbars appear on the right, and turn the attack by the Rota! The Stugs are spotted! Panzerfausts miss wildly and a flame thrower stops one Stug from defensive fire, but tank terror is failed.

    TURN 4

    Top of 4.

    The Decoy StuGs take pot shots and wipe out an enemy StuG!

    Several members of the Left Rota assault into the wood, and push the Germans back.

    The left flank

    Another flight of 2 HS129s, and again 1 is shot down.

    The remnants of the right pioneers prepare to hit the Decoys... and they completely bring them down.

    The German pioneers pour fire into the Rota.

    • StuGs: 2 Assault Guns

    TURN 4 SUMMARY
    Steven's Rota Razvedki: The Left Rota platoon assaults, pushing the Germans back. The Scant remnants of the Right Rota hop back in their M4A1s and hug a building avoiding the Brummbars.

    Luke's Pionierkompanie: The Brummbars and StuGs move closer to the Left objective. The Left pioneers open up on the approaching Rota. Planes swoop in again, but do no appreciable damage besides knock out the CO's car!


    TURN 5

    Top of 5.

    The remnants of right Rota sneak around.

    The Shermans and Rota prepare for the final thrust!

    And push the Germans off the objective!

    10/5s arrive and knock out an M17!

    Luke hopes for a point on the M17s, but can't bring this attack home, failing his firepower!

    Brummbars assault the Rota, going for another point!

    But in the end, but Soviets stop the Brummbars, and the Rota do not break.

    TURN 5 SUMMARY
    Steven's Rota Razvedki: The final push has come, and the objective is secured.

    Luke's Pionierkompanie: Luke moves everything forward towards the objective, but after failing to score a point decides to call the Game.

    At this point, though Luke is still in it, another turn or two and it's a foregone conclusion. As it was only Turn 5, he decided he hadn't quite stalled enough (another turn or two and it'd be a different story!). I contend that anything could happen and I've seen weirder things, but am just happy we had a pretty good game!
