US Tanks vs Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers in Italy (MW)

Sean and I decided to take a break from our usual stomping grounds of the Desert and the Eastern Front to visit a theater we often ignore: Italy! So we went with Mid War. I ran US tanks, Sean ran Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers. The mission was Fighting Withdrawal

Steven's US Tank Company
  • HQ: 2x M5A1 Stuarts
  • 5x M5A1 Stuarts
  • 5x M5A1 Stuarts
  • Tank Recon
  • 3x M8 Scotts
  • Full Armored Rifle Platoon
  • 4x M10 TDs
Sean's Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers
  • HQ + knackers

  • 3x Stug G w/ Schurtzen
  • Priority Cannon Stukas

SETUP AND DEPLOYMENT

The board! The 2 US objectives are on the flanks placed by me. Sean's is in the building in the back center.

My right flank.

Tank Destroyers in the Middle.

Armored Rifles and CO.

The Tiger dominating the hill on Sean's right.

Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers and the CO in Sean's center.

Panzergrens and the 2iC on Sean's left.

UNITS IN RESERVE
Steven's US Tank Company
    Sean's Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers

      DEPLOYMENT SUMMARY
Steven's US Tank Company: I load up my Stuarts and M8s on my right flank and Armored Rifles and M10s on the left.
Sean's Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers: Sean puts Panzergrenadiers on his left and center. The Tiger holds the right. His 3 Stugs are placed in ambush.

      TURN 1

      The right flank zips forward.

One Stuart Platoon hangs back a bit as they navigate the plowed field.

Armored Rifles move out behind the M10s' security section. I forgot just how slowly halftracks move on hills now!

      Cannon Stukas swoop in

      Stugs ambush down the road!

      How did we miss them??

The Tiger opens up on the Armored Rifles at long range.

Leaving one halftrack and all occupants in ruin.

The Stugs hit the M8 scotts, knocking out 2 and bailing one.

The Stukas knock out 2 Stuarts and bail 2 more! wow!

      COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
      Steven's US Tank Company
      • M8 scotts: 2 assault guns
      • 2nd Stuart Platoon: 2 tanks
      • Armored Rifles: 3 stands
      Sean's Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers
      • "Right" Panzergrenadiers: 1 stand

      TURN 1 SUMMARY
Steven's US Tank Company: General advance up both flanks
Sean's Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers: Stugs ambush- them plus the Tiger and Stukas knock 2 US platoons below half strength, though both hold on!

      TURN 2

      Recon lifts gone to ground.

Everything shifts right to be out of site from the Stugs.

M10s spring their ambush and pop the Tiger.

      Seek. Strike. Destroy.

Stuarts open up, knocking out a halftrack.

      No guts, no glory.

      The panzergrenadiers pull back.

Stukas continue to harass the US platoons!

      Stugs knock out 2 Stuarts.

      One M10 burns.

      Burning Stuart.

The platoon breaks. Though my M8 scott still holds the objective, Sean's clever use of his 2iC keeps the objective hot!

      COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
      Steven's US Tank Company
      • M8 scotts: 2 assault guns
      • 2nd Stuart Platoon: 2 tanks
      • Armored Rifles: 3 stands
      • 1st Stuart Platoon: DESTROYED
      • M10s: 1 Tank Destroyer
      Sean's Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers
      • Tiger: DESTROYED
      • "Right" Panzergrenadiers: 3 stands

      TURN 2 SUMMARY
Steven's US Tank Company: M10s spring their ambush and wipe out Sean's Tiger. Stuarts assault on the right, driving panzergrenadiers off the objective.
Sean's Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers: Stukas knock out an M10, while STuGs finish off the Stuarts on the right.

      TURN 3

      Turn 3.

Everything on the left moves out.

2nd Stuart platoon comes racing out!

They MG then assault the panzergrens, driving them out of the woods.

      The Panzergrenadiers quit the field.

I now hold the left objective, so Sean takes a desperate gamble.

      Stugs hunt down the Stuarts

And leave them in a bad way, destroying the platoon.

      COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
      Steven's US Tank Company
      • M8 scotts: 2 assault guns
      • 2nd Stuart Platoon: DESTROYED
      • Armored Rifles: 3 stands
      • 1st Stuart Platoon: DESTROYED
      • M10s: 1 Tank Destroyer
      Sean's Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers
      • Tiger: DESTROYED
      • "Right" Panzergrenadiers: DESTROYED

      TURN 3 SUMMARY
Steven's US Tank Company: Armored Rifles secure the left-most objective while the 2nd Stuart platoon crashes into and destroys the panzergrenadiers.
Sean's Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers: Sean's Stugs claim a 2nd Victory point, but his Stukas can't stop me from holding an objective.

This was a tough fight for Sean. His list was very small and elite, but was forced to stay wildly spread out. Had I played more cautiously, it would've made for a dull game, but I think I could've been methodical enough to not shed victory points. Anyhow, it was nice to get an Italy game in, and it's always a pleasure to game with Sean!

Just curious: I didn't see any Self-Defense AA fire go down. Since there's no restriction for shooting in the next round, I didn't know if it was left out for brevity or not.

The MW Stuart Horde list is verranice.

Oh yeah I fired every AA round I could but it never had an effect unfortunately. Usually with a boat load of .50s you can nab 1 plane or so, but no such luck here.

Paint those vineyards! GepPznGren can't hang with the Stuart horde.
