Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company

  • Scouts w/ 1 section
  • 1 Platoon Guards Strelkovy w/ komissar

DEPLOYMENT SUMMARY
German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie: The Germans put their Objective in a pretty bad place and have to plop a Grenadier unit on each, far away from each other. The Tiger Platoon and CiC deploy in woods, ready to support either objective.
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company: The Reds put their big Infantry and big Tank units on near one side to push the objective early. AAA trucks are positioned to fend off the pesky German air.

TURN 1

Germans just dig and shoot ineffectively -- Soviets move out!

ISU-122s bog one and leave another exposed to the Tigers on the hill.

The bogged ISU-122 is still on the Soviet objective.

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company

      TURN 1 SUMMARY
German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie: Germans attempt to dig in on the objectives and take shots at the ISU-122s to no effect. Air takes out an ISU-122.
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company: Soviets advance and duck the Tigers.

      TURN 2

Tigers take shots and bail 1 ISU-122.

German planes roll in and bomb the Soviet Armor! 1 is destroyed!

The Red Horde advances through the trees.

      COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
      German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company

          TURN 2 SUMMARY
German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie: The Germans Tigers bail 1 ISU-122 and destory another with air. The infantry prepares for the Red Horde assault.
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company: Soviets move up toward the objective with the ISU-122s supporting the Infantry.

          TURN 3

With nothing to shoot, Tigers move to support the Infantry and the CiC gets bogged down.

The Grenadiers finally get Dug-In and wait for the red storm.

          COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
          German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie
          • 3 Stands of Infantry
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company
          • 1 ISU-122
          • 2 Stands of Infantry

          TURN 3 SUMMARY
German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie: No Reserves for the Germans. The Tigers move to support the Grenadiers for the coming Assault.
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company: No Soviet Reserves. The Soviets move and prepare for the Assault.

          TURN 4

The far side of the board is pretty lonely and uneventful for the Krauts....

The Reds advance and let loose with the Flamethrowers!

Soviet forces are pinned in Defensive Fire and suffer 2 Casualties.

          COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
          German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie
          • 3 Stands of Infantry
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company
          • 1 ISU-122

          TURN 4 SUMMARY
German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie: Germans get 2 more Tigers from Reserves and move them up to support the Grenadiers.
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company: The Soviets move up and Flame the Grenadiers. The Assault is launched, but the Germans barely pin them and fight off the Assault. V3 clearly had an impact with the 8" rule, pinned MGs ROF 2, etc.

          TURN 5

Tigers are in support of the Grenadiers, who have already beaten off one Assault.

The lazy side of the board moves into the buildings for wine, cheese and fresh sheets.

ISU-122s arrive. The other platoon moves up to challenge the Tigers, as their fire as been ineffective so far.

The Assault is lined up - the Soviets lose a couple to Defensive Fire. This time, they get in.

The Soviets totally whiff and the Germans roar back. The bloodbath begins....

The Germans crush the Soviets and drive them off.

          COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
          German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie
          • 3 Stands of Infantr
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company
          • Bloodbath

          TURN 5 SUMMARY
German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie: PAK 40s arrive on the board. The Germans do nothing in their turn, but get very lucky in a Counter-Assault.
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company: Soviet Reserves arrive -- 3 more ISU-122s! Another disasterous Assault by the USSR leaves them in a bad way.

          TURN 6

The Germans prepare to assault the remnants of the Strelkovy.

The krauts take out 2 of the 3 AAA Trucks with the Tigers... but risk the retun fire of the ISU-122s.

          COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
          German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie
          • Bloodbath
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company
          • Bloodbath

          TURN 6 SUMMARY
German Sturmkompanie & Schwere Panzerkompanie: The Germans kill off the Strelkovy and have to take out 1 more truck to (V2)Win the Game (V3) Force the 2iC to take a Company Morale Check.
Soviet Guards Strelkovy and Guards Heavy Assault Gun Company: ISU-122s crush a Tiger Platoon and kill the Tiger CiC.
So, at this point we all forget that the 2iC can take a Company Morale check in V3! So, the Germans move out and shoot the remaining AAA truck dead and we call the game. The next day, we remember that the lone 2iC set up WAY on the other side of the board could take that check. Oh well, we are learning! This game clearly demonstrates that the V3 changes make a 'UGE difference. The Germans got much better able to deal with Soviet Hordes -- Combat Attachments count for Platoon size, Gun teams can shoot over Infantry in Defensive Fire, Pinned MG teams have ROF 2.

Thanks for posting. I have a Red Dog / Grey Wumpus tournament in a couple of weeks and these reports are helping me learn the finer points of V3

Great report, that was really brutal.
Where can we get those casualty markers, with the Advance into enemy positions they could be handy.

I like our list and think it has enough flexibility to take on anything on offense or defense. Here is a part of the conversation Steve and I had after the battle:

(Luke) Steve you have one job at Cold Wars and we will win.
          (Steve) What's that?
(Luke) If the assault is too risky and I say go for it you need to say "No Seriously, do not do that assault"

Great report. The V3 rules do change certain situations but the game is better for it in my opinion.
          cheers

Wow the slaughter was trendous, so many casualty markers! How are you guys finding the 8" assault bubble? Getting those Tigers in with the DF must have hurt. I heard about a tactic of angling in from the flank and semi conga-lining it into the assault, however it may not play well in RL. What was happening with the Soviet armour, they seemed to hover around getting shot up. Unfortunately I can't tell from the photos the context of their struggle. Were the Tigers on the hill and the forest?
Great battle report, loved the battlefield and all of the painted minis.

Jon didn't get a picture of the last throes of the Soviets where those ISUs popped 3 Tigers!

But yeah, ROF 1 on the move vs vets in concealment just hurts
