Soviet Guards Tankovy vs Finn Infantry

Sean and I have both been working furiously on some Eastern Front armies. I with Soviets, he with Finns. We decided it was time for our inaugural battle. He ran his Finns with a few German support options (the 105s and Paks were played as Finns), and the Grenadiers were played as German Allied Grenadiers. The point values were around 1865 (what can I say, we wanted to cram it all in!), and the mission rolled for was Encounter!

Wow, how 'bout those stukas.
Cool to see Finns at work.
How long did this battle go for?

Tyler said...

Nice. I agree with Sean, Eastern Front is pretty awesome :)

Great battle report

I really like the finns

pachongo3000 said...

I am not sure of the time. Maybe two hours, max. We went through, so many turns, so quickly. The Stukas rocked. I played them with the stats of the Finnish Fokkers. So 2+ FP. Best 90 points I have spent in a long time.

Great game guys! I love East Front!

Can't wait to see more epic battles from this theater!

Thanks guys!

As Sean said, it really didn't last that long. Thanks Neal, I can't wait to throw more men into the grinder!

very nice aar!

Steven,
I'm wondering if maybe consolidating your 2 T34 platoons together and adding a light tank company might be more effective. The min T34s seemed to suffer and Soviets get nice bulk discounts!

Anatoli said...

Can't believe the Finns held on as long as they did. Their infantry platoons are so tiiiiiny. You guys play the "Ostfront" rulebook for eastern fron?

Great battlereport as always, and always cool to see the Finns :-)

Tyler said...

@ Anatoli,
Ostfront is out of date. The up-to-date version is Eastern Front

Johnnyutah said...

Awesome report guys. When I first started FoW all we did was Eastern front and I can say they are all pretty much blood baths. Sean if you want me to I can bring some of my Fokkers from Armaments in Miniature to historicon if you wanna check em out.

AJ (Allan) Wright said...

105s in a more open area would allow them to fire direct at least one turn before assaulted by enemy tanks. That's a good chance to knock out some extra tanks.

Great to see the Finns in action. They're one of my favorites.

indierockclimber said...

@Tyler- Like I said at the beginning of the report this was literally all I have done for the soviets! I am very much sold on the big units for the discount, but I also didn't want to break the minimum force org.

@Anatoli- pssh. Small compared to the Poles, sure!

@Johnny- I think Sean has one of the AIM Fokkers, but I don't think he's put it together yet

@AJ- Hindsight is 20/20 :) Sean probably didnt expect the T-34s to come crashing through the woods!

pachongo3000 said...

@ Anatoli- I do have steve's old copy of ostfront and look through it. Most of the organization is the same, just the point values are off. Which if you have that, and use easy army, then you are pretty good.

@ Johnnyutah- I do have one of their Fokkers. I plan on picking up the other two. They look awesome. You will see it on the table, next game. We can talk Finn tactics when we are up there, though.

@ AJ- Steven is right with hindsight. I had them in a spot to be able to continue firing, without the risk of being shot up. I thought about a more open deployment, but decided that was best. I didn't expect him to come through the woods, but I did expect some return fire, and british bulldog. I would have done the same again. They fired every single turn.

I'm not sure I have ever seen artillery take out so many tanks, at least in the first few rounds ... I guess they are conscripts v veterans though.

Great report, thanks.

I don't know why I keep rambling about Ostfront - just checked by book shelf and there it was "Eastern front" which I got from Maelstrom Games by accident when ordering Blitzkrieg. I guess "Ostfront" sounds so much cooler that my brain wants it to be the correct name :D

And yeah, that maneuver through the woods. When I saw those pictures I was "what the hell?". So that would have cought me off guard as well haha - needs some clever "In Soviet Russia..." joke to explain that one.

cbaxter said...

great game

pachongo3000 said...

@ Relaxed Dave- I was hoping for more throughout the game. They were trained, though. Conscripts will be awesome to face.

@Anatoli- Agree with both "ostfront" in my head, and " in soviet Russia" joke.

@cbaxter- thanks. Hope to show more

Just found out AiM won't be making the con this year. I had plans to pick up some katy's and a bunch of bunkers. Oh well theres always mail order i guess. As far as tactics I can tell you how my dad has consistently dominated me using Finns, but he will be there on Friday so I'm sure he could share his plans and such.

pachongo3000 said...

That blows about AiM. I think they are the perfect army to fit my play style. I always enjoy a a few tricks from an experienced general.

Neal Smith said...

I still call it "Ostfront" too. :)
